Nashali Maldonado

Nashali Maldonado loves to help people.  But she also believes you should, “Live life for yourself, not for others.”

She is fourteen years old and attends the Julia De Burgos Middle School in North Philadelphia. She was elected vice president of her class this year and she also happens to be a student counselor.  As a student counselor, she is able to help other students if they have any problems.

One of her favorite hobbies is playing volleyball.

She doesn’t have a specific type of music she likes to listen to because she likes a little bit of everything. Communicating with others is something she also loves to do, and that is why she joined the journalism program at Temple University.

Alexa Hicklin

Alexa Hicklin enjoys writing, taking photos and cooking.  She is 18 years old and she goes to Benjamin Rush Arts High school. She is from Northeast Philadelphia.

Alexa used to be a music major but she  lost interest in it in the 10th grade (sophomore year). Although she likes a little bit of all kinds of music, the subject  she enjoys the most is English.  She is in this program because she enjoys writing and  photojournalism

If you ask Alexa to describe yourself in five words she will tell you she is “outgoing, personable, determined, caring, and optimistic.”

Donte Green

The most interesting thing about Donte Green is that he speaks his mind. Donte is 17 years old and knows that he want to be a businessman in the future. He attends A. Philip Randolph Career Academy and majors in auto technology. Donte’s favorite subject is English. He enjoys reading books that speak to him. His favorite book is “The Catcher in the Rye.” Donte said he connected with that  book because the main character spoke his mind just like Donte does.

Donte lives in North Philadelphia. He likes to play basketball and video games. He also enjoys listening to all types of music, mostly hip-hop and R&B. His favorite artist is Michael Jackson (MJ). “MJ is a great musician and will always be remembered as one of the greatest.” Donte has a friendly personality and he is not afraid of speaking to a stranger.

Dado Nianghane

One of the most interesting things about Dado Nianghane is that she speaks both English and French.

Dado, who loves drawing. got involved in this program because she thinks that journalism could be a wonderful back-up plan in the future. She is 16 years old and goes to Mastbaum High School. Her favorite subject is Reading. Dado lives in Northeast Philadelphia.

Dado says that she likes a little bit of everything when it comes to music, but she talked a lot about Hip-Hop and R&B. She also likes a little bit of Rock & Roll and a lot of cultured music.

Darrell Moore

The most interesting thing about Darrell Moore is that he loves tattoos. At the ripe “old” age of 15 he already has a few of his own.

Darrell hopes to one day be a famous basketball player. In the meantime he plays at his high school, Samuel Fels, as a small forward. He enjoys basketball and hip-hop. Unlike many otherd teenagers, he likes to read. It’s his favorite subject. His favorite literary genre is fantasy.

Darrell is from Olney and got into this program because he would like to know how to collect information. This skill will give him something to fall back on just in case the basketball career doesn’t work out.

Jamel Crawford

Jamel Crawford is a very athletic 16 year old young man who enjoys basketball, track and field and football. “Dedication is the key to success,” he said.

When he grows up he would like to be a professional football player. But he also has a backup plan. That plan is to be a dentist. Jamel is from North Philadelphia. He attends high school at A. Philip Randolph Career Academy where he just finished his sophomore year. His favorite subject is math.

Jamel’s hobbies include playing basketball, where he likes to play power forward. He also likes playing football; his favorite positions in that sport are quarterback and safety. In his free time Jamel enjoys listening to music and enjoys Hip-Hop the most. Some of his favorite artists are Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West, and Rick Ross.

Zyhir Baker-Elam

Zyhir Baker-Elam is an inspired entrepreneur and clothing designer. Zyhir is a 15 year old who lives in the Olney section of Philadelphia. Surprisingly, at his young age, Zyhir already understands that the sports industry is extremely competitive and risky even though playing  sports is his favorite past time. Nothing gets Zyhir more excited than football, track and field. Nevertheless he changed his career goals from a professional sports player to an entrepreneur and clothing designer as designing clothes is another favorite activity.

Zyhir’s  inspiration comes from his parents who are  they’re both entrepreneurs.  He currently lives with his mother and stepfather.

When Zyhir is at home he tends to “crank up the volume” of his favorite music. Zyhir enjoys listening to Rap, HipHop and R&B. His favorite music artists are Meek Millz, Rick Ross and Lil’ Wayne.

Zyhir is a 10th grade student at Lincoln High School. At Lincoln, he finds math and physical education to be his most intriguing subjects. He believes his most interesting characteristics are that he’s calm, outgoing and likes making new friends.

Zyhir explained  he joined the program “for the money. I mainly joined because my mother’s friend referred me to the program. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try out the program and see what it was about.”

He is waiting see what the journalism program at Temple University will add to his life.

Kenisha Pinckney

The most interesting thing about Kenisha Pinckney is that she is determined, focused and likes to meet new people. Kenisha is18- year olds and lives in North Philadelphia. She is a June graduate of  Mastbaum High School and is set to attend Widner College in the fall. Her favorite subject is English. Kenisha’s hobbies are reading, writing, singing, dancing, acting, eating lots of food, doing hair and texting on her cell phone.

Kenisha listens to a lot of music like soul, jazz, Hip- Hop and R&B. Her favorite artists are Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Brandy, Chrisette Michelle, Jamie Foxx, Tyrese, Usher, Boys 2 Men, 112, Drew Hill, L.V.

Kenisha said that when she grows up she wants to become an anchor and reporter for a broadcast news station. The thing that helps Kenisha to follow her dream is her love of writing. She wants to  share information to help educate people. Also she wants to deliver a lot of useful information to the community. She says she wants people to know her for her work. She is determined to be in front of a camera and says nothing will stop her from reaching her goals.

When Kenisha was asked what made her chose this type of program she said she needs the experience because this is her dream in life. This will also prepare her for college because she will be taking journalism as her college major. Kenisha is a very determined young lady.

Que Scott

Que Scott, a bright aspiring journalist, was named after her mother’s close childhood friend who everyone nicknamed “Q.” Journalism became her passion at an early age. When she was little she would visit her grandmother and scour over the piles of newspapers, soaking- in the events of the world. She learned then to appreciate the truth of the world and desired to someday also contribute to those papers.

Now, 17, Que lives in Wynnefield, the childhood home of actor Will Smith, and attends Overbrook High School, Smith’s alma mater. Que is preparing for college and finishing her last year in high school. She has chosen to focus her study on the journalism track.

“The world wouldn’t be anything without journalism,” she said as she passionately explains why news and information are crucial for our social well being. Like other famous journalists before her she excels in her English studies as well as journalism. Her favorite stories are non-fiction.

Que hasn’t decided where she is going to go to college yet, but it certainly won’t be in Philadelphia, she said. She is looking forward to warmer weather where walking to school in the snow and the bitter cold isn’t a daily activity for one third of the year.  For the celebration of her graduation her aunt will be taking her to some warmer weather for a trip to Brazil with a multiple- day pit- stop in Miami. She is looking forward to enjoying new experiences in places she has never been before.

Henry Beard

Henry Beard, a young man who lives in North Philadelphia, speaks both Spanish and English.

Henry was born on September 8th 1993 and he “happily” lives at home with his mom, little brother, and grandmother. His main hobby is sports and he enjoys playing basketball and football.

His favorite genre of music is Hip- Hop.

Henry goes to Kensington Creative and Preforming Arts High School and plans to attend college. At college he wants to study communications. Henry’s dream for the future is to play in the National Football League. He would like to play either safety or corner back which are the two positions he currently plays.

Shaquil Taylor

Shaquil Taylor is an 18 year- old from South Philly.  He is of the Christian faith.  I

n his free time he likes to workout, eat, meet people or play basketball at a nearby park.  Shaq has just graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School and will be starting his undergraduate program at Lackawanna College in August.

The most interesting thing about Shaq is his personality. He always seems to be happy and puts anyone around him in that same mood.  Shaq is a great person to be around because he will not tell you anything wrong and he always tries to be real with others.

In the future Shaq plans on finishing school with honors in academics and athletics.  His favorite subject is journalism. Shaq likes to write.  He also enjoys listening to rap, Hip-Hop and R&B music. His favorite artists are Trey Songz, Chris Brown, and Meek Mill.

Shaquil is in this program to learn more about the field of journalism before he goes off to college to study communications & media.

Sindora Stallworth

Sindora Stallworth was born on November 12, 1992, in  Philadelphia, although she lived part of her life in Madison Heights, VA.

She was named after her grandfather Sindie Simmons. Sindora is 18 years- old and is the oldest child in her family. She has a younger brother named Gregory.

Sindora listens to all types of music.  She attends Communications Technology High School, where she is learning portrait photography. Her favorite subject in school is Algebra.

Sindora loves to write poetry and take pictures around her neighborhood. She aspires to be a professional photographer and plans to open her own business one day.

Sindora is a part of Prime Movers, because she would like to learn more about photojournalism, and to better her communication skills.

Davia Magee

Davia Magee is originally from North Philadelphia but has had the privilege to live in many places in Philadelphia and some other cities and states. Davia likes to go shopping, practice hairdressing and also sing. She attends Benjamin Franklin High School.

The most interesting thing about her is that she loves herself for who she is and she is very determined with anything she really wants. Her favorite genre of music is Hip-Hop and R&B.

In this program she hopes to build better skills in something she has an interest in and she thinks maybe it will influence her to take journalism in college.

In the future, Davia’s main goal is to be successful and to be the best she can possibly be.
